Battle Report: Cygnar (Stryker1) vs Cryx (Deneghra1)

This was a fun Friday night game at my friend's house. I brought a variation on one of my oldest and most favorite Stryker1 lists, and he brought his first-ever caster, Denny1.

Cygnar (Storm Division)
  • Commander Coleman Stryker
  • Squire
  • Lancer (Gremlin)
  • Centurion (Molehill)
  • Centurion (Hardship)
  • Storm Strider
  • Journeyman Warcaster
  • Charger (Scarecrow)
  • Eiryss, Mage Hunter
  • Journeyman Lieutenant Allister Caine
  • Ace
  • Field Mechanics
  • Alexia & the Risen

Cryx (Black Industries)

  • Warwitch Deneghra
  • The Withershadow Combine
  • Barathrum
  • Ripjaw
  • Ripjaw
  • Corruptor (Grim)
  • Hellslinger Phantom
  • Pistol Wraith
  • Pistol Wraith
  • Ol' Grim
  • Bloat Thrall
  • Gorman Di Wulfe
  • Bile Thralls (min)
  • Skarlock Commander
  • Necro surgeon & Stitch Thralls
  • Necro surgeon & Stitch Thralls
  • Mechanithralls (min)
  • Croe's Cutthroats

Deployment

I'd played my friend and his evil, evil Denny lists before, and I had a clue that he'd be bringing her again, so I brought a list I'd built entitled “How do you solve a problem like Deneghra?”, which had Ace for true sight and Eiryss to mess with Denny should she get too close.

We rolled Scenario 1: King of the Hill, and the terrain was very woodsy - I've never played on a table with four forests. The left side had three forests lined up, and the right had two small lakes and the Khador building frame.

My opponent won the roll and chose the side with all the forests. He chose the observatory to deal with Eiryss, and I chose the observatory to deal with Denny.

Cygnar Turn 1

Cygnar runs forward. The centurions both get arcane shields, the storm strider gets snipe, and Eiryss gets blur, making her DEF19 against shooting.

Cryx Turn 1

Cryx moves up cautiously. This is why I went first - now they have to fear my shooting.

Cygnar Turn 2

The storm strider and charger shoot out one of the ripjaws. One centurion runs to engage the other ripjaw, and the other centurion runs up to the flag. Both centurions get polarity field.

Eiryss disrupts the corruptor, and Ace and Caine shoot at some of the Cutthroats.

Cryx Turn 2

Deneghra feats, and The Withering makes everyone sad. The mechanithralls charge and destroy the Cygnar objective.

With Denny's feat, the bile thralls need a 6 to hit a thrall warrior, and every one misses. Barathrum also misses. Ol'Grim finally kills it.

The central centurion gets Gorman's rust bomb, Deneghra's parasite, a pistol wraith makes it stationary, and I think there's a token in there somewhere that says he got a piƱa colada. It's just too many tokens. Barathrum charges in and puts the centurion out of his misery. Ol'Grim sets the centurion on fire.

Cryx scores a point for having destroyed the objective, although I'm not certain why they didn't score the far rectangular zone - perhaps the entire unit wasn't inside.

(Cryx 1, Cygnar 0)

Cygnar Turn 3

The storm strider charges the unit of mechanithralls and lightning goes everywhere, wrecking the whole unit.

The remaining centurion walks up and destroys the Cryx objective, but fails to kill the ripjaw because he's withered.

Eiryss gets fire for effect, planning on walking up and shooting Deneghra with a boosted RAT 9 shot to disrupt her, but is about a quarter inch too far away, so she disrupts the corruptor again. Afterwards, my opponent points out that if she had moved up, she would have been countercharged by Barathrum, so it seems that plan was doomed from the start.

Stryker gives himself snipe and disrupts Barathrum. He also channels arcane shield onto the storm strider and feats.

Cryx gets no points this turn, Cygnar gets one for the far zone and one for destroying the objective.

(Cryx 1, Cygnar 2)

Cryx Turn 3

Both helljacks are disrupted, and Stryker's +5 armor feat is up. This is going to be a tough turn for Cryx. Cryx spends an inordinate amount of time trying to kill the thrall warrior on the flag. Barathrum finally charges Eiryss and misses. Denny casts dark seduction on Eiryss and walks her in backwards, Gorman blind bombs her, and the skarlock commander shoots her in the back, killing her. My personal fear was that Denny would seduce Eiryss into shooting and disrupting Stryker, but that didn't happen.

Other than that, Cryx struggles with Stryker's feat this turn.

Cygnar scores a zone, Cryx scores the flag.

(Cryx 2, Cygnar 3)

Cygnar Turn 4

The lancer moves up to Barathrum and takes out his cortex, then the risen charge, CMA, and do a little.

The centurion moves up and tries to kill the corruptor, but fails. He does kill the bloat thrall with his shield, and it blows up like a disgusting balloon full of bile, afflicting the centurion with continuous corrosion, while the corruptor is immune. Now the centurion is corroded and on fire.

Ace and Caine take out most of Croe's Cutthroats, but are not able to take out the last one and clear the zone. The charger and storm strider take out much of the blob of infantry between the two far zones.

The only point this turn is Cygnar for the far zone.

(Cryx 2, Cygnar 4)

Cryx Turn 4

Bile thralls move forward and purge, killing all of Alexia's risen and the thrall warrior, and damaging the lancer. Barathrum fails to kill the lancer.

Denegra casts parasite on the centurion, and the last cutthroat charges. He and the ripjaw aren't able to significantly injure the centurion.

(Cryx 2, Cygnar 5)

Cygnar Turn 5

The fully-loaded lancer finishes off Barathrum, the fully-loaded centurion finishes off the corruptor, ripjaw, and cutthroat. Caine finishes off Ol'Grim.

The journeyman warcaster runs forward, and Cygnar scores all three zones and the flag.

(Cryx 2, Cygnar 8)

(Cygnar Win!)

Final Thoughts

  • I'd initially thought that moving the centurion into such a vulnerable spot on turn 2 was a mistake, but perhaps spending it to take up so many of Denny's resources on her feat turn was a good use.
  • My opponent's dice this game were just terrible. I rolled slightly above average in general - really well early on, then had some bad dice towards the end.
  • The storm strider into low-armor infantry is just bonkers, especially when it rolls a lot of lightning generator leaps.

My Favorite Cygnar Casters and Lists

I know that Haley3 and basically anything in Gravediggers is setting the world on fire at the moment, but firstly, I own two trencher models, neither of which has been assembled during the three or so years I've owned them. Secondly, I know that I don't have the skill to manage moving a Haley3 cloudwall and not clock out on turn two - I'm not even going to bother trying.

I've got a few casters and lists that I absolutely love, and I'd like to share them right now.

Battle Report: Cygnar (Stryker1 Heavy Metal) vs Cryx (Denny1 Ghost Fleet)

I got together recently with a friend who hasn't played warmachine in over a year. His Cryx models were gathering dust, so he pulled out the only army he could remember: Denny1 Ghost Fleet. He had to proxy a number of models, and had to tweak the army list a good bit since Denny's warjack points have been changed since he last played, plus he'd bought a few new models that didn't exist a year ago. I just played the list with which I'm most familiar.

Battle Report: Cygnar (Stryker1) vs Khador (Kozlov)

This was my second of two casual Stryker1 games at CaptainCon. It ended up being an immensely fun and very close matchup. I had a great time with this game. My opponent had a ball-busting list consisting of far too many boxes and an insane kayazy swarm.

Battle Report: Cygnar (Stryker1) vs Cygnar (Stryker2)

Before heading to CaptainCon, my intent had been to play Nemo3 a bunch and get familiar with the caster. But when I got an offer for a casual game, I immediately gravitated to the list with which I'm most familiar: Stryker1.

Battle Report: Legion (Kryssa) vs Cygnar (Stryker1)

This was an impromptu casual match in a game shop, and neither of us knew much about the opposing army. I just used the same Stryker1 list I had during the tournament months ago, as I was familiar with it. My opponent brought Legion.

Here's his list as best I could reconstruct it, and my own afterwards.

Legion (Children of the Dragon)
  • Kryssa, Conviction of Everblight
  • Succubus
  • Azrael
  • Nephilim Bloodseer
  • Nephilim Bolt Thrower
  • Nephilim Bolt Thrower
  • Nephilim Protector
  • Blighted Nyss Warlord
  • Blighted Nyss Warlord
  • Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters
  • Bayal, Hound of Everblight
  • Blighted Nyss Raptors

Cygnar (Heavy Metal)
  • Commander Coleman Stryker
  • Squire
  • Centurion
  • Centurion
  • Lancer
  • Charger
  • Storm Strider
  • Arlan Strangewayes
  • Journeyman Warcaster
  • Charger
  • Alain Runewood
  • *Cyclone
  • Sword Knights (min)

Legion Turn 1

The Hex Hunters run into the forest, gaining stealth due to prowl. The rest of the army moves forward quickly.

Cygnar Turn 1

The sword knights run forward to the forest edge, acting as a screen for the shooty jacks. The Centurions move up into the zones. The charger and storm strider take out a couple raptors. Stryker gets blur, and both centurions get arcane shield. The Cyclone lays down covering fire.

With the covering fire in place, I should probably have put Blur on the sword knights, bringing their DEF vs shooting up to 16, but for some reason I thought there wasn't much shooting that was threatening them.

Legion Turn 2

Hex Hunters take out three sword knights, and one charges and shadow binds a charger. Azrael sprays the centurion, taking out its cortex despite the arcane shield.

Cygnar Turn 2

Looks like I goofed and left a couple jacks out of control range. The centurion has no cortex anyway, but now the charger gets no focus to shake its shadow bind. The lancer takes out the hex hunter engaging the charger. The charger can't move, but takes its unboosted shots. I think I actually made a mistake here, thinking that with shadow bind, the charger had no movement to sacrifice in order to aim. But in retrospect I think it could actually have aimed, given that shadow bind simply says that when you advance you can only change your facing - not that you can't advance at all.

The storm strider shoots Azrael. The left centurion moves forward, and the right one moves into a position where Arlan might soon repair his cortex. Arlan and Runewood take the flag, and Stryker feats.

Both players score their flags, and Cygnar gets a point for the righthand zone.
(Legion 1, Cygnar 2)

Legion Turn 3

My opponent realizes that the centurions holding the zones are his biggest issue, and walks everything up to the one in the lefthand zone. (it isn't chargable due to polarity shield) With Stryker's feat up, the centurion doesn't take a single box of damage. A bolt thrower pushes Arlan off the flag, but Runewood holds it. The other bolt thrower toes in to contest the righthand zone.
Both players score their respective flags, and no points on zones.
(Legion 2, Cygnar 3)

Cygnar Turn 3

There are a few options here. Kryssa just moved up to barely behind the forest, and I know I can get line of sight and range on her with both the Strider and a charger. It would be easy to take out the bolt thrower and score, bringing me to a two point lead, but Kryssa is camping zero fury, and I've got a good assassination shot, so I go for it.

The lancer runs up, and the squire moves to be certain he's in range of Stryker. Then Stryker casts Earthquake, boosting the hit roll. This knocks down Kryssa, leaving her at DEF7 due to the cloud she's in. The Strider moves up and hits on anything but snake eyes, boosting damage twice. This is enough to end the game, and I don't even need the charger shots.

(Cygnar win!)

Final Thoughts

  • I can't help but think that if Kryssa had gotten the cloud and then activated afterwards, she'd have been able to move back behind the cloud after she'd done her thing, thus blocking line of sight entirely. She's also got tactical supremacy, which would let her reposition and get the same thing done.
  • My opponent may have been as unfamiliar with my army as I was with his, and was likely not aware of Stryker's pop-and-drop assassination, which is most definitely a thing. He'll know for next time.
  • Stryker's army is a tough nut to crack. I believe my opponent's plan was to push the centurions out of zones, but that wasn't possible with the strider. I think he was looking to remove the strider and push the centurions for a scenario win. It may also have been a mistake not to rush in and jam the shooty jacks. Chargers that get mobbed by infantry are sad and mostly ineffective.
  • My army has a problem with stealth. The best option I've got is either melee or e-leaps.

My First Steamroller

This weekend, I participated in my first warmachine tournament. I've been playing the game for maybe two years, but hadn't previously felt ready. That was largely because I was terrified of deathclock.

I did find that during the tournament games, I got very shaky, couldn't do remedial math (ugh, what's 13 minus 7?!?), and made so many horrible decisions. I forgot to activate models, forgot to allocate focus, moved models into my charge lanes, forgot to feat, and lost at least one activation shooting at a stealth model. I didn't prioritize models, and basically had zero real plan much of the time. I played much of the game entirely without thought. This is not how I normally play warmachine. Deathclock stole my mind.

Novice Listbuilding: My First Steamroller

I've been playing Warmachine for just about two years now, since slightly before MK3 was announced. But it hasn't been until very recently that I've felt ready for a tournament. Now don't get me wrong - in many ways, I know that I'm still not ready, and may never be. But I'm not ever going to be any readier than I am now, so what the heck? Let's look at the list pairing thoughts of an utter amateur.

Combined Arms: Profiling Stryker1

The first caster post I've got is about the first caster I ever played: Lord Commander Stryker. I started out in the final year of Mk2 Warmachine playing the Stryker / Ironclad / Lancer / Charger battlebox. I played nothing but Stryker1 for about four months before I moved on to Caine1, who was actually pretty good back in those InfantryMachine days.

Back then, and until recently, Stryker1 was considered a middle-tier warcaster. It's only been very recently that he's risen to any kind of relevance in the tournament scene. I've thrown together a Heavy Metal list I really like with him, but I haven't yet had a chance to play it.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm able to throw together a better writeup on the caster than someplace like Battle College, but I'd like to lay down my own thoughts on Stryker1. If you're someone in the first year of playing the game and you're eagerly scouring the internet for anything you can find on Stryker, maybe you'll find some value in this.
